Made Ubuntu 8.04. Look Great
Well i’ve been havin’ Ubuntu for some time now, and yesterday morning i remembered that there are lots of eyecandy things for Ubuntu. I love beautiful windows, beautiful effects, even if they consume my processors, it’s alright.
The Dock:
Last year when i had Ubuntu 7.04 - Feisty Fawn i tried like crazy to install a dock application, like on the MAC OS X’s, i’m addicted to those, they are just beautiful, and they are modern, i just love them, so i searched google yesterday, and i didn’t even have to search for so long, i found what i’ve been lookin’ for, it was AWN - Avant Window Navigator.
Easy to install easy to use. I found a guide, so i won’t write another one, the link is :
The Beautiful Windows:
Last year this was called Beryl, altho i don’t know if the name has still remained or not, but for sure the application has another name, it’s Emerald. A beautiful eye-candy tool for those who want to see something beautiful, mainly for those who come from the windows side of the world, this tool is perfect, and you can customize so many things, and you have like thousands of themes already, and the list is just growing. There is a guide also for this, so no need to post one :
*NOTE : Both of the guides are for 8.04 Hardy Heron.
I’ve made some screenshots of my Ubuntu:
The last one is how my Ubuntu looks now, and i love it, hope you guys liked it to, i’m really curious what others did in this category, and if you need help just let me know (:
Ubuntu - For human Beings.

Smileys on IRC
Smileys have been used around IRC since it was created. They make our chatting even more interesting, and bring some kind of emotions in them. They help you describe how you feel about certain things. The first smileys around the internet world was created in 1982, by a man called Scott Fahlman. Here is the original text from wikipedia:
“The creator of the original ASCII emoticons :-) and :-(, with a specific suggestion that they be used to express emotion, was Scott Fahlman;[7] the text of his original proposal, posted to the Carnegie Mellon University computer science general board on 19 September 1982 (11:44), was considered lost for a long time. It was however recovered twenty years later by Jeff Baird, from old backup tapes.[8]
19-Sep-82 11:44 Scott E Fahlman :)
From: Scott E Fahlman (Fahlman at Cmu-20c)
I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers:
:-)
Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark
things that are NOT jokes - given current trends. For this, use
:-(”
(Here is the link to read more if you wish about the history of smileys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/-)#History )
These ASCI emoticons changed the world of the Internet. It spread out through e-mails, conversations, and later on when IRC appeared people got to use it there to, somehow making it more simple, like “:)” and “:(". When i got to see these smileys and i didn’t get it, it was back in 2000 when i started to come on Undernet, and i just asked the guys who used it, what does it mean, but i got no reply, then i asked a guy from the internet café where i was going daily, and he just said “It means happiness, a nice smile, just look at it sideways.". From that moment “hahaha” and “/me smiles” got forgotten, and I started to use “(:".
Long time has passed since that moment, and IM’s have improved and they got their own smileys, image like smileys identified with text. Weird as it is, but these smileys had an impact on IRC smileys, people knew they can’t use images as smileys on basic IRC clients, like mIRC, XChat or irssi, but that was not a problem, they just used the text that described the given smiley, so all you saw was “:$” “:>” “:|” “=))", depending what IM software did the person use, MSN and Y! Messenger were the most frequent clients. This way you could express more emotions over IRC, not just a smile or a sad face, but you could blush, have a long face, laugh on the floor laughing, express love, and much more. Here are some basic text smileys you can see around Undernet today, i’ll write after each one what does it mean. Here we go:
:) - Basic smile.
:( - Being sad.
:)) - Laughing.
=)) - Laughing and rolling on the floor.
=(( - Crying.
:| - Long face, sometimes they use it when someone’s sarcastic.
:"> , :$ - Both of them mean blushing.
:X - Love something or someone.
:-” - Whistling, usually after you said something, and you don’t want it to be taken in consideration.
xD - Equivalent of LOL - The newest and most used smiley in the world of IRC.
These are only some, and 95% of them are taken from Y! Messenger, the famous IM client, and of course there are much more.
Of course beside these you have other ways of describing your emotions about things. You have messages, texts which got shorten, and sometimes the 1st letter of the words got combined. I’m thinking about “LOL” and it’s followers like “ROFL” (Rolling on the floor laughing) “ROFLMAO” (Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off"). Beside these on Undernet a new smiley “package” has appeared. When i first saw these i didn’t really get it what’s it all about, and I don’t really know who came up with it, but it’s being used more of then day by day. These are:
*G* - Grin - as in a smile
*EG* - Evil grin
*VEG* - Very evil grin
And who knows what other forms it has, but for sure if you see it, You’ll get it.
Smileys are here to make your IRC life more full of emotions, making it more easy and more fun. Everyone uses smileys, some use these some use others, but for sure some kind of way of describing his/her emotion about things.
P.S.: If you see me smile you’ll see smiling like “(:” or “):", i just want to let you know, that NO, I’m not left handed, or I’m not upside down, it’s just the way I got used to it, so don’t get scared (: . You can even PM me, and tell me what kind of smilies do you use, maybe we can get a list of the most used smileys. (:
